Bacterial Growth Flashcards
Name 2 ways to culture bacteria,
- nutrient broth solution in a culture vial
* colonies on a agar plate
what is an autoclave?
they are strong containers, a little like ovens, which use high temps and pressures to kill bacteria
what is an aseptic technique?
a technique that avoides contaminating cultures
Name some aspectic techniques.
- killing all microorganisms on equipment such as inoculating loops by flaming equipment in a bunsen burner.
- keeping all lifs on equipment when not in use
- wearing gloves, eye goggles, lab coats or other protective equipment
what is the lag phase?
growth is slow at first, while the bacteria acclimate to the food and nutrients on their new habitats
What is the log phase?
Once the metabolic machinery is running, they start multiplying exponentially, doubling in number every few minutes
Whatvis the stationary phase?
As more and more bacteria are competing for dwindling food and nutrients, booming growth stops and the number of bacteria stablises.
What is the death phase?
Toxic waste bulids up, food is depleted and bugs beging to die
how does bacteria duplicate?
by binary fission
