Classical Conditioning Flashcards
Brain areas involved in classical conditioning
amygdala
Brain areas involved in operant conditioning
Initial stages of learning include activation of temporal cortical areas, particularly the limbic: basal ganglia & reward systems (dopamine release)
3 aspects of Neural Basis of brain plasticity
existing synapses become more complex
new synapses are produced
old synapses may be lost
2 Mechanisms of brain plasticity
long term potentiation
long term depression
Long Term Potentiation (LTP)
A strong burst of electrical stimulation applied to presynaptic neuron which produces an increase in the amplitude (number) of EPSP (excitatory post synaptic potentials) in the postsynaptic nuron synapse remains potentiated for a long period of time
Long Term Depression (LTD)
neuron becomes less active in response to repeated stimulation, can be beneficial
