Classical Conditioning Flashcards
What is the definition of learning ?
Relatively permanent change in behaviour as a result of experience
Who discovered Classical Conditioning?
Ivan Pavlov
What is Classical Conditioning?
Explains how certain stimuli can trigger an automatic response
What is an example of CC in our everyday life?
Can openers and pets; Beer Commercials; Fears and phobias
What are the four CC terms?
Unconditioned Stimulus (US) Unconditioned Response (UR) Conditioned Stimulus (CS) Conditioned Response (CR)
What is an Unconditioned Stimulus?
Natural stimulus; Elicits a response without prior learning
What is an Unconditioned Response (UR)?
Reflexive response that is elicited by an US
What is a Conditioned Stimulus?
A neutral stimuls that is repeatedly associated with an US
What is a Conditioned Response (CR)
A newly learned response to a CS
What are the US, UR, CS and CR for ths example below?
Normally when a hungry dog sees food, it starts salivating.
Experiment: 1- Ring bell, then show food and repeat it multiple times
2- Ring bell but no food. Now bell leads to salivation
US= food UR= natural reflex CS= bell CR= salivation
What are some factors influencing Classical Conditioning?
- Number of pairing of CS and US
- US intensity
- How reliably CS predicts US
- The timing between CS and US
3 year old Peter is afraid of rabbits, how could that fear be cured using Classical Conditioning?
By giving Peter something pleasant and bring rabbit in slowly so he can associate something pleasant with the rabbit
What can happen if someone who usually takes drugs in the same E, decides to take the same amount but in new E?
It can lead to an overdose because the tolerance changes when in new E
