Classic study - Baddeley (1966) Flashcards
When did this study take place
1966b
What did baddeley aim to do
To see if he can find a similar pattern of results for long term memory that he did for short term
Procedure: was it a field or lab experiment
Lab experiment
Procedure: what type of design was it
Independent groups design
Procedure: how many participants where there and what did they do
75 participants
Servicemen (from army)
Procedure: what was tested before the experiment began and what happened as a result
A hearing test was given before procedure
3 participants where excluded from the study
Procedure: name the lists and what type of word each one of them had
List A - acoustically similar words
List B - acoustically dissimilar words
List C - semantically similar words
List D - semantically dissimilar words
Procedure: how many words did each list have
10 words
Procedure: how many participants did each list
List A - 18
List B - 17
List C - 20
List D - 20
Procedure: how was each list presented to the participant
Aloud on a tape
1 word every 3 seconds
Then the participants had 40 seconds to recall as many of the words as they could in order
Procedure: what happened after spending 20 minutes on an unrelated task
They had to recall the words in order
This was an unexpected test
Results: what where the results for LTM
No significant forgetting in acoustically similar although there was in acoustically dissimilar control list
No significant difference in recall of the 2 semantic lists
