what are the 3 classes of medicines under the medicines act 1968?
- GSL [general sales list]: sold in retail outlets. pharmacist doesnt need to be present.
- P [pharmacy medicine]: sold in registered retail pharmacy by RP or under the supervision of an RP. must not be accessible by the public by self-selection.
- POM [prescription only medicine]: needs a prescription by appropriate prescriber.
GSL and P are OTC medicines
what are pharmacy only medicines?
is a GSL medicine that a manufacturer restricts sales through via pharmacies
what class of drugs are pseudoephedrine/ephedrine?
P medicine
what are the restrictions regarding pseudoephedrine and ephedrine sales? [there are 3]
- do not sell more than 720mg of pseudoephedrine without a rx
- do not sell more than 180mg of ephedrine without. a rx
- do not supply both at the same time without a rx
what is the restriction for paracetamol and aspirin sales?
no more than 100 non-effervescent tablets/capsules can be sold at one time
no restrictions for soluble paracetamol/aspirin
what are the restrictions for selling codeine/dihydrocodeine?
- solid doses [capsules/tabs] licensed in acute/moderate pain not relieved by simple otc analgesics alone
- only one pack can be sold. pack size of over 32 is rx only
- 3 days use only due to addiction
- PIL/pack must state indication and can cause addiction if used >3days
- PIL must contain signs of addiction
what is the age restriction regarding codeine linctus [cough and cold medicine]?
18 and over
what is the age restriction for certain ingredients in the cough/cold medicines including antitussives, expectorants, nasal decongestants, antihistamines?
NOT for children under 6.
can be used in second line for children aged 6-12 but only for 5 days.
what are the restrictions for levonorgestrel?
1500mcg tablet. sold to pt over 16 years old and within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse
what are the restrictions for ulipristal?
can be sold to women of child bearing potential and up to 120 hours [5 days] of unprotected intercourse
can pharmacists supply an advanced supply of oral EHC

what happens if a child under 13 yo came into the pharmacy asking for EHC?
can provide ullipristal [ella one] however children under 13 cannot legally consent to any sexual activity so must report to social services except in exceptional situations backed by documents

- what programme must women at child bearing ages be put on when starting oral isotretinoin?
- what are the rx restrictions for isotretinoin for women of child bearing potential?
- pregnancy prevention programme PPP. protects women during treatment and 1 month after stopping treatment. pt has monthly follow up, effective contraception and pregnancy tests
- under the PPP rx only valid for 7 days. max supply for 30 days. fax or repeat rx not acceptable.
when would an emergency supply of oral isotretinoin to a woman of child bearing potential be allowed?
supply emergency only if telephone requested by PPP specialist prescriber with confirmed negative pregnancy test within previous 7 days
