Abdominal muscles function:
1) flex and hold organs in place
2) flex the vertebral column.
what are all internal organs called?
viscera
Solid viscera organs:
liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, kidneys, ovaries, uterus.

Hollow viscera organs:
stomach, gallbladder, small intestine, colon, bladder.
(SSBCG)
where can you palpate aortic pulsations?
in the upper anterior abdominal wall.
where are kidneys located?
retroperitoneal (posterior to abdominal contents)
12th rib—forms angle with vertebral column called:
costovertebral angle (CVA).
In the Infant why is it easier to palpate organs?
abdominal wall thinner—easier to palpate organs.
in the infant what takes up more abdominal space?
liver
in the infant the bladder is higher in the:
Bladder higher in abdomen.
Changes in pregnancy:
decreased motility of GI tract.
Intestines displaced upward and posterior by enlarging uterus.
symptoms of constipation:
Decrease in stool frequency (less than 3 times per week)
Straining
Hard stool
Feel of incomplete evacuation and anorectal blockage
What is decreased/delayed in aging adult:
Drug metabolism by liver decreased
Gastric acid secretions decreased
Esophageal emptying delayed.
what is increased in aging adult:
increased adipose tissue
Incidence gallstones increased
Test used to evaluate constipation symptoms:
