Class II Composite Restorations Flashcards
What is the “matrix”?
The band pulled around the tooth to aid in the formation of a contact area with the adjacent tooth.
Should the matrix band touch the adjacent tooth when the composite material is placed?
Yes! It must be touching the adjacent contact area in order to create a true contact with the composite resin.
What thickness of matrix band should be used for a class II restoration?
Ultra thin.
Thinner than a typical metal band and better than a clear polyester matrix.
What are bitine rings used for?
To stabilize the matrix band
Provide additional tooth separation
Be careful the bitine ring doesn’t make a dent in the composite!
Which portion of the preparation should be restored first?
Restore the proximal box portion of the preparation first, incrementally.
This allows better curing, less shrinkage, tight proximal contacts, variation in color of the composite to match the tooth
What tool is used to remove any overhangs in the gingival area?
The No. 12 surgical blade.
How wide should the ideal marginal ridge enamel remain?
Molar = 2 mm Premolar = 1.6mm
When choosing matrix bands should we begin with the tofflemire band?
No - we should choose the sectional matrix first.
What do sectional matrix systems include?
A wedge, a band (the matrix), and a retainer ring (aka bitine ring)
During our Class I restorations in clinic, which retainer should we choose?
The G-Ring retainer
What step should take place after the matrix system is removed?
Light cure from all angles (lingual, buccal) to cure any composite that may have been missed while the band was in place.
What are Tofflemire-type matrices used for?
When both proximal surfaces are involved. Contour and burnish the matrix band for a good fit.
What is a Tofflemire retainer?
The universal retainer. Holds the matrix band in position. The band fully incircles the tooth.
Used when:
3 surfaces of a posterior tooth have been prepared (m, d, o), and often for 2 surface Class II restoration.
