- exclusion and truancy and more common among poor families
- 90% of failing skls are in deprived areas

Describe how poor housing causes material deprivation?
- overcrowding
- temporary accommodation
- cold damp conditions
- overcrowded = can’t concentrate
- constant skl changes = disrupted education
How does poor diet and health cause material deprivation?
- lower intake of minerals and vitamins
- higher rate of anxiety and hyperactivity
- poor nutrition = can’t concentrate / more sick
- disrupted behaviour = disrupt learning
How does hidden Costs of education cause material deprivation?
- each child per year costs £1614 for basic skl related expenses (2013)
- ‘hand me downs’ = bullied
- part time work = less revision
- can’t afford skl trips = miss educational experiences

- Callender and Jackson - w/c more likely to fear debt, 5x less likely to apply to uni
- apply to cheaper unis = less opportunities
