What is cultural deprivation?
A
- lack of cultural attributes necessary for educational success
- e.g inadequate socialisation, inadequate Lang, inappropriate attitudes and values

- Bernstein (1975) - 2 types of Lang:
- restricted code: basic vocab, bad grammar
- elaborate code: good grammar and vocab

- less likely to discuss child’s progress with teachers

- different style of parenting that encourages active learning
- recognises the value of activities e.g visits to museums
- more likely to but educational toys and books
- recognises parent education has an affect on achievement
- explains why not all children of w/c parents do equally bad
