- language
- parents education
- working class subculture
What does Bernstein say about language?
WC language codes are restricted and deficient. MC language codes are elaborated which are used by teachers and in textbooks which allows them to understand content better.
What does Douglas say about parents education?
Parents attitude to education has a big impact on education. WC parents place little value on education and as a result motivated their children less and were less involved in school
What does Sugarman say about working class subculture?
The WC focus on short term goals for immediate pleasure at the expense of long term more valuable goals, that the MC favour. This leads them to pursue jobs instead of further education

- housing and health
How does the cost of education impact educational achievement outlined by Tanner?
The cost of transport, books, computers, uniforms, equiptment and field trips can put a heavy burden on working class families. This may mean that WC children do not have access to these, which would enhance their education.
How does housing and health impact educational achievement outlined by Howard.
Children from WC families have poorer diet and nutrition. This may lead to tiredness, lack of concentration and higher absence due to high rates of illness
What are the 3 types of capital outlined by Bourdieu?

- economic capital - money
- educational capital.
What does Bourdieu say in relation to the conversion of the 3 types of capital?
