what is cultural deprivation?
the idea that working class children lack the cultural equipment to do well at school

language, parental education, w/c values, speech codes
w/c parents inadequately socialising their children
what is the myth of cultural deprivation?
the idea that w/c fail because the education system is dominated by m/c values
what is material deprivation?
lack of education materials which can lead to worse attainment
- diet/health
- financial support
- fear of debt

housing, diet, financial support, fear of debt
eg. textbooks, tutors, etc
what is cultural capital?
the advantage that middle class have over working class
knowledge, skills, language, behaviours
what are the 3 things that make up cultural capital?
- educational capital
- economic capital
- social capital
what internal factors do interactionists argue is the determining factor for class dea?
Labelling
this happens as early as primary school
what is the ‘ideal pupil’?
middle class, obedient, hard working etc.
w/c children are furthest away from this image
what are the 3 stages of the self fulfilling prophecy?
- teacher labels pupil and makes prediction about them
- teacher treats the pupil based on the assumption of the prediction, as if it’s already true
- pupil internalises teacher’s expectation of them and therefore become the pupil the teacher believed them to be
what is streaming?
separating children into different groups based on ability
m/c likely to be in higher streams, w/c likely to be in lower streams
explain the a-to-c economy
schools focusing on students who they think are able to get 5 grade Cs to boost the school’s league table position to increase funding and attract more pupils.
what is the educational triage?
pupils being sorted into 3 categories:
1. those who will pass anyway and don’t need much help
2. borderline pupils, targeted for extra help to try and boost school’s league table position
3. hopeless students
what is a pupil subculture?
a group of pupils who share similar values and behaviour patterns
what is differentiation?
the process by which teachers categorise pupils (similar to streaming)
