MI definition
collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion

Primary Belief of MI
The capacity and potential for change and adherence is within every person! Strength based approach
Change Talk
Any client speech in favour of changing a target behaviour
Sustain Talk
Any client speech that favours the status quo (no change) specific to a target behaviour.
Primary Goal of MI:
Behave in a way that will reduce discord & sustain talk (resistance) and Evoke Change Talk
So Why Don’t People Change?
Doesn’t seem all that important •Hassle •Enjoy current ways •Takes time to develop new habits •Reactance •Demoralized •Depressed •Ambivalence
Motivation is:
- Fundamental to change!
- A dynamic and fluctuating state
- Particularly sensitive to interpersonal interactions with influential others, especially helping professionals and peers!
- Strongly influenced by the interpersonal “style” of helping professionals!
