- Aboriginals: higher likeliness to smoke cigarettes leading to higher levels for lung & other cancers, breathing problems
- social exclusion: higher rates for aborig. Cdns, recent immigrants, woman, disabled people ; leading to diabetes & other chronic diseases (respiratory& cardiovascular)
- suicide rate: higher among 1st nation communities or FN on reserve
- unable to get prescriptions filled or treatment done: Cdns with below average incomes
- disparities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGBT) community include less access to insurance & health care services
Are there common themes in regard to disparities apparent between the Native Americans of the us and the aboriginals of Cda?
- Colonization & inter generational trauma
- isolation
- barriers in education & of language
Ex: domination of whites over aboriginals; set up reserves (set up to assimilate the aboriginal population), cultural values taken away, mistrust was rooted
-history of govt not following up with treaties & not being honest in that way (further roots distrust)
