APGAR
What does APGAR stand far?
Appearance Pulse Grimace Activity Respirations
What does the Ballard Score measure?
Neuromuscular and Physical Maturation
What is Erythromycin
Antibiotic used in the newborns eyes to prevent blindness that can be caused by Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
Risks: blurred vision, redness, irritation, some swelling, issues of bonding
What is Vitamin K
Most controversial of all newborn practices
Response to HDN
Injection or oral treatment to correct the newborn’s low Vitamin K levels
What is the controversy surrounding Vitamin K?
All newborns have this “low” level
Colostrum has a good amount of vitamin K
Foods may be the problem–women don’t eat the same vitamin K rich foods we used to
Early Onset HDN
24 hours
mainly associated with mothers who have taken anti-convulsent drugs prenatally, antibiotics, and tuberculosis meds.
Classis HDN
1st week
manifested by oozing of blood from the intestines. red dots of the skin can show up
Late onset HDN
2-6 weeks
Half are intracranial bleeds; newborns rarely die from this
Hepatitis B
Spread through blood or body fluids
Those at highest risk: Adults between the ages of 20-50 who participate in high risk behaviors (gay, infected transfusion, multiple sex partners, healthcare workers)
It can be passed from mom to baby.
Newborn Metabolic Screening
PKU: heel prick
Has to be done 24 hours and within the first 2 weeks
Screens from 26-50 disorders depending on the state
About 250 us children get PKU, it occurs when babies cannot process the phenylalanine and can result in mental retardation
Hearing Screening
Non-invasive, screens babies that are at increased risk for possible hearing loss; test babies within a month
Pulse Oximetry Screening
Screens for CCHD (Critical Congenital Heart Defects); Oxygen saturation 24-48 hours postpartum; must be over 95%
