Class 3 - Station 2: Peritoneal Folds and Disposition of Viscera Flashcards
What periotneal fold are the hepatogastric and hepatoduodenal ligaments a part of?
Lesser omentum
What is the falciform ligament?
Ligament that attaches the liver to the body wall
What forms the free border of the falciform ligament?
Ligamentum teres
What is the free border (ligamentum teres) an embryonic remnant of?
Left umbilical vein
How many layers of peritoneum are present in the greater omentum?
4
Why is the greater omentum known as the abdominal policeman?
- When inflammation of the intestines occurs…
- Inflammatory exudates attract the greater omentum to the area of inflammation and it wraps itself around it
- This is a protective mechanism to stop generalised peritonitis from occuring
What are the paracolic gutters? And why are they significant?
Areas next to the colon. Can collect fluid and aid in the movement of infected fluid during peritonitis.
List three abdominal viscera that are connected by a mesentery
- Jejunum (sup. mesentery)
- Ileum (sup. mesentery)
- Colon (mesocolon)
