What are the types of release pattern of a medication?
Some tablets and capsules will break rapidly after administration and release
Other tablets are prolonged released (over a long period of time)
What are some abbreviations of releases?
XR= eXtended Release LA= Long Acting CR=Controlled Release XC=Extended Release SR=Sustained Release
What are the problems of prolonged release patterns?
More expensive , contains a larger amount of drug compared to immediate drug
Why should you not crush extended release drugs?
Because they have a higher does compare to immediate release drugs and this release full dose all at once and can lead to side effects
What are advantages of tablets and capsules?
Convenience
Portability
Economical
The drug is more stable compare to the liquid dosage form
Provide an accurate pre-measured dose
Little to no taste
Capsules and tablets are formulated to release drug slowly (prolonged) this allows less frequent daily dosing
