Convenient, provide accurate dose, little to know taste
What is an example of dosage form?
Tablets
What does tablets contains?
Medicinal ingredients and non medicinal ingredients
What are the functions of non medical ?
Diluent (filler) is added to make it bulkier and binder is added to make ingredients stick allowing the tab formation
What are the 2 main categories of tablets?
Compressed tablets and coated tablets
What is a compressed tab?
The ingredients are compressed in a dye// no coating// they’re splittable
What are coated tablets ?
The tablets are compressed & then coated with special later that serve different functions
What are the different coatings?
Sugar coated/film coated, enteric coated tablets, and other coated tablets
What is sugar coated/film coating?
A coat that improve the taste of the drug and protects the drug in the atmosphere which affects the drug
What is enteric coated tablets ?
They act as a coat to keep it intact in the stomach so the medication doesn’t release in the stomach
What are other coated tablets?
Other special coats are used to control the release of the drug
What are the types of tablet administrations?
Orally, sublingually, buccally, other routes (vaginal, urethra, etc)
What is an orally administration?
Orally administration is when the tablet is swallowed with water or other liquid
Can also be chewed
Also used to prepare solution before administration
What is a sublingually administration?
Tablets that are formulated to dissolve quickly and release the medication under the tounge to rapidly go to the bloodstream
What is a buccally administration?
A tablet that is released in the gum and cheeks which melt slowly. Eg lozenges
