Class #3 Flashcards
What is Preload? What is it determined by?
When your heart is totally full and ready to pump to the rest of the body. It is determined by volume of venous blood returned to the heart
Define Afterload, and what is it determined by?
the amount of FORCE required to eject the filled heart. It is determined by SVR (Systemic vascular resistance) and ventricular wall tension, because if you aren’t able to contract that muscle well, the force is not effective.
What if someones Ejection Fraction is
They have systolic heart failure. This is diagnosed by an echocardiogram
What is diastolic Heart failure?
impaired filling during diastole, which occurs in the absence of systolic dysfunction– LVEF >40%
What occurs in Diastolic heart failure?
Myocardium is “stiff” and often hypertrophied and does not relax normally after contraction
