Class 3 Flashcards
What is muscle stripping?
Very slow gliding technique
What is the technique application for muscle stripping?
Olecranon, knuckles, thumbs, fingers, pisiform or other
suitable specific contact surface.
What are the uses for muscle stripping?
-Reduce TrP pain
-Restore length of muscle
• Position client in position that allows muscle it’s full ROM or appropriate amount of tension
• Reinforce fingers or thumb for larger or deeper muscles use your elbow
• Pushing whenever possible
• For larger or deeper muscles use your elbows
• Apply enough pressure to engage taught band
• Repeat increasing pressure with each application (possibly reduce pressure directly over the taught band)
• 8mm/sec
• If taught band remains unchanged after 3-5 passes move along
Uses for specific compression?
-Reduce TrP pain
-Inhibit tone
• Non Gliding technique can be applied to muscle tendon connective tissue apply pressure perpendicular to target tissue
• Pressure light to heavy
• Apply and release pressure- can be more sustained or intermittent
• 5-10 sec or more for each compression duration for each area 1 minute
• Exhibit exquisite control in both direction and depth of pressure
• Duration up to 5 minutes of repeated series
• Rate is a few seconds to a minute
What is trigger point pressure release?
➢ relaxed muscle is stretched to point of increasing resistance within comfort zone and then gentle, progressively increasing pressure is applied until finger encounters a definite increase in tissue resistance (barrier)
➢ there may be discomfort but there should not be any
pain
➢ as it (barrier) releases, gently increase pressure to engage a new barrier
What are the steps when performing trigger point pressure release?
• prepare tissue with petrissage techniques
• find taut band (deep probing, pincer palpation& flat
palpation)
• muscle stripping/swedish
• find the trigger point
• muscle stripping
• alternating ischemic compressions/TrP pressure release
• prolonged ischemic compressions
• hot hydrotherapy application (optional)
• stretch
