Class 2 - Station 5: Kidneys, Suprarenals and Ureters Flashcards
Where do the kidneys lie (area of the abdomen and vertebral level?)
Posterior abdominal wall betwee T12 and L3
What are the 3 main structures that enter/leave the hilum of the kidney?
- Renal vein
- Renal artery
- Pelvis of the ureter
What is the order of structures from anterior to posterior entering/leaving the hilum of the kidney?
Renal vein
Renal artery
Renal pelvis (ureter)
How are the kidneys peritonised?
Retroperitoneal
What sits directly anterior to the right kidney?
Head of the pancreas
1st and 2nd duodenum
What is the anatomical location of the suprarenal gland?
Superior to the kidneys at the level of T12. Anterior to the posterior 12th rib
Identify the labels
- Suprarenal glands
- Vena Cava
- Aorta
- Body of kidney
- Ureter (just distal to renal pelvis)
What is significant about the left renal vein?
Has to cross over abdominal aorta to reach the IVC.
What type of tissue are the ureters?
Muscular
What is the most proximal ureter constriction between the kidney and the bladder?
At the pelviureteric junction (junction between ureters and renal pelvis)
What condition can occur with a very narrow pelviureteric junction?
Hydronephrosis
What is the middle contrsiction site of the ureters?
At the major iliac vessels
What is the most distal ureter constriction site?
The vesicoureteric junction (between the ureters and the bladder)
What is the bilareral action of the psoas major contracting?
Flexion of the trunk
