Martyrium
A church built at a site or tomb associated with a Christian martyr or Saint
Register
A vertical level in a work that consists of several levels especially where the levels are clearly separated by lines.
Barrel vault
Simplest form of vault, a series of arches placed side by side one after another to form a barrel roof.
Attributes
the symbolic objects that identify a particular deity, saint, or personificaiton in art
Central Plan
any structure designed with a primary central space surrounded by symmetrical areas on each side.
Longitudinal Basilica
t-shaped church with a long nave, side aisles on each side with the transept crossing at front and an apse behind it.
Ambulatory
the covered passage around a cloister or the processional way around the east end of a cathedral or large church and behind the high altar
Alabaster
a fine-grained, translucent form of gypsum, typically white, often carved into ornaments for indoor use only as it is water soluble
Eucharist
The part of the mass where the bread and wine are transubstantiated into Christ, the wafer.
Paten
a plate, typically made of gold or silver, used for holding the bread during the Eucharist and sometimes as a cover for the chalice
Transubstantiation
the conversion of the substance of the Eucharistic elements into the body and blood of Christ at consecration, only the appearances of bread and wine still remaining.
Apse
The apse is the semicircular or polygonal termination to the choir or aisles of a church. In relation to church architecture it is generally the name given to where the altar is placed or where the clergy are seated. The apse is separated from the main part of the church by the transept.
Transfiguration
a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state, particularly of Christ.
Iconography
the visual images and symbols used in a work of art or the study or interpretation of these.
Holy Trinity
The three forms of God, the Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost.
