Structural Violence definition?

A

1969: Social, economical, political, legal structures that stop individuals and societies from reaching their full health potential. That can cause physical and psychological harm. Characterized by poverty, social inequalities, racism, gender inequalities. The concept is intended to study the social machinery of OPPRESSION

A

Injustices some groups suffers from often unconscious bias of well-intended people that is the major group in a society. Injustices some people suffer in ordinary life. (Eg. bureaucratic hierarchies, stereotypes, media…)

A

Branches: Visible outcomes - Racism, homophobic slurs. They feed the tree, by reinforcing its structure. Trunk: Practices/Beliefs - Idea that minorities need to be saved. Support the main structure. Roots: System - Colonialism and white supremacy. Without the roots whole system fails.

A

Starts with power -> Stereotype (messages) -> Prejudice (thoughts) -> Discrimination (Action) -> Oppression (System) -> Internalized oppression (group oppressed starts believing and acting like those stereotypes)

A

Any distinguishing characteristic. Gender: Women = sexism, more common crime, domestic violence, rape, maternal mortality, genital mutilation, sex trafficking. Men = more torture Race: Idea of race has no biological significance. Genocides (Armenian, Rwanda, NaTIVE, aPARTHEID, HOLOCOST) Refugees, homophobia, poverty

Systemic: Policies and processes that maintain and reproduce avoidable and unfair inequalities. Interpersonal: Between people in day to day interactions Epistemic (relates to knowledge): Position of one superior to the other one group which is considered knowledge by that superior group. Internalized: The internalization by people of racist attitudes towards members of their own ethnic group, including themselves
