Class 1: Operations Stradegy & Procees Analysis Flashcards
What is operation management?
Part of a business that creates value in the form of a product or service by transforming inputs to outputs. How the work is done in the best possible way.
What do operation managers do?
Effectively and efficiently manage the flow of material and requisite knowledge within and across the organization
How would you think strategically about operations?
making decisions about how to use resources (people, machines,
material, money, time, etc.) to create customer value in an
efficient and sustainable way.
What are some key attributes of well designed operations
Have tasks structured in processes & managed by systems so that they are flexible, respond to variety of demands & dynamic environment.
What are the 10 strategic operation management decisions
- Good and services design
- Quality
- Process & capacity design
- Location selection
- Layout design
- Human Resources & job design
- Supply chain management
- Inventory
- Scheduling
- Maintenance
How is the work best done for operations management?
it depends on goods and servies, to think strategically about creating customer value in a efficient and sustainable way.
What is a process
utilities resources to transform inputs into outputs. e.g untreated patients, outputs - treated patients
flow uniformity
all flow units go through the production process in a similar manner e.g computer assembly, low customize
what form of transformation processes is a Job shop
offers customizability, intermittent production, more flexible operations. large number of different products but low amount.
what form of transformation processes is a flow system
large production volume, more standardized, less flexible operations, specialization of equipment.
What is throughput time?
The total amount of time that it takes to run a particular process in its entirety from start to finish. More focused on speed
Capacity
The maximum rate of output of the process, measured in units of output per unit of
time (e.g., 4 dozen per hour).
Cycle time of an activity:
The time that elapses between the activity’s completion of
successive units, assuming the activity operates continuously. (For example, if an activity
has a capacity of 4 dozen per hour, then the activity’s cycle time is 15 minutes.) Figure out the bottle neck

Capacity of process calculation
is determined by the bottle neck, which is the process step that takes the longest time. bottleneck / time.
