Class 1 Flashcards
Movement
- Spatial Interaction
- the interconnectedness between places, depends on:
1) distance
2) connectivity
3) accessibility
Region
common traits that areas or groups of areas around the world share
- climate
- location
- beliefs
- language
- ethnicity/race
formal (region)
a common characteristic, cultural linkage, or physical aspect
functional (region)
define around a certain point or node
- density is highest in the center and fades as you move further away
vernacular or perceptual (region)
the idea of a region based in personal perception
e.g. regions: midwest, west, south, sunbelt
Human-environment interaction
modification of earth’s surface by humans, where consequences depend on how people interact with environment and use its resources
- positive/negative
- intentional/accidental
Location
relative vs. absolute
relative location
where you or something is located in relation to something or someone else
absolute location
exact location on earth’s surface (longitude and latitude coordinates)
Place
understanding/sense of place
- infusing a place with meaning and emotion
Lines of Latitude
parallels; imaginary lines running East and Wes parallel to the equator
Lines of Longitude
medians; run between North and South poles & are east and west of the Prime Meridian
Cylindrical Map
shape: rectangular
- land area is close to scale
* most often used
Cylindrical Map Negatives
Eastern and Western areas separated, area closer to the poles
Azimuthal Map
used to show area for large maps, typically maps of continents
conic maps
smaller area maps, typically used to display information on larger individual countries
- projections cause distortions
Four Major Types of Map Distortions
- shape
- distance
- relative size
- direction
Mercator’s projection
shape is mostly true, but size is distorted
Peter’s projection
relative size is true, but shape is warped
Robinsons projection
An uninterrupted projection display used to display info across oceans
- negative: minimizes land area, maps are curved
Reference Maps
show locations of places and geographic features
- absolute locations
Thematic Maps
Tell a story about the pattern of its distribution, or its movement
- relative locations
Chloropleth Map
a thematic map used to represent statistical data using the color mapping symbology technique
- units are color shaded in relation to a data variable
Dot Distribution Map
uses a point symbol to visualize the geographic distribution of a large number of related phenomena
