- Clarence had a claim due to his marriage with Isabel 1469 (daughter of Richard Neville, Warwick)
- Anne Neville younger daughter of Warwick.
Previously, Married to Lancastrian Prince Edward of Wales.
-wanted the inheritance.
Warwick’s widow Anne de beauchamp was losing out.
How did Clarence try to secure the inheritance? And why?
He captured the 16year old Anne and took her to London, disguising her as a maid.
- in order to stop the Duke of Gloucester marrying her
- Clarence didn’t want to share the lands with his brother.
How did Richard Duke of Gloucester respond to the capturing of Anne Neville?
- He located her and seized her.
- took her to a sanctuary at St Martins and married her. To gain a share in the beauchamp inheritance.
- Married between 12 February and 12 July 1472.
What did Edward IV do to settle the dispute between his younger brothers?
- he summoned a Rotyal council to settle the inheritance. February 1472
- Clarence wouldn’t share the lands if Gloucester has Anne.
- Clarence was framed full security of the last of Warwick’s estates on 18 March 1472
- claimed titles of Earl of Warwick and Salisbury and the Earldom of Devon on 25 March 1472
What did Warwick’s widow do to try and get her inheritance back from Clarence? And how did Gloucester help?
Legal challenge put in place to protect her rights.
- continued through to 1473.
- Gloucester men took her to a sanctuary in the North in June 1473 to give her lands back so she would give them to Gloucester.
What was the end result of I beauchamp inheritance?
- Clarence wasn’t happy with Gloucester Getting the inheritance from the Countess.
- finally settled in May 1474.
- Gloucester, Clarence, Isabel and Anne all given equal shares of Warwick’s lands.
- Countess Anne Stripped of her titles and pronounced legally dead. -lost everything.
Could Edward trust Clarence after his dispute of the beauchamp inheritance?
No
- Clarence had not regard for inheritance rules.
- Edward could not fully trust him again.
