What are the six stages of language acquisition?

- pre-linguistic stage 0-6 months
- Babbling stage 6 months (repetitive babbling and variagated babbling)
- First word stage 6-12 months

- Addition – adding something completely new to pronounciation (e.g ‘daddio’)
- Diminutisation – adding ‘y’ on the end (e.g doggy)
- Deletion – the child removes a sound from the word altogether (e.g da)
- Consonant cluster reduction – the child removes some consonant sounds from the word (e.g ra-it instead of rabbit)
- Substitution – the child substitutes an easier phoneme in the place of a harder one (e.g loghurt instead of yoghurt).
- Assimilation – the child uses a sound rom earlier or later in the word as its easier to say (e.g lellow instead of yellow).

- Instrumental – the child uses language to fulfil a purpose or need.
- Regulatory – to influence others.
- Interactional – the child interacts with others to develop socially.
- Personal – the child wants to express themselves.
- Heuristic – the child wants to learn about the world – questions.
- Imaginative – the child wants to be creative with language including telling stories.
- Representational – the child wants to relay facts.

‘Fis-‘
A
- Children notice when caregivers make mistakes but may be unable to say the correct answer / unable to recognise that they are saying it wrong.
- E.g a child was saying “fis” and the caregiver asked if they meant “fis” and they said no, but when the caregiver asked if they meant “fish” they said yes.
