CLA Flashcards
What are the Theories of CLA and who are they by
Behaviorist - Skinner Nativism - Chomsky Interactionist - Bruner Cognitive - Piaget ZPD - Vygotsky
Behaviorist theory
Skinner Blank slate which Lang is imprinted onto - positive reinforcement - imitation H/w - follow observable patterns which cannot be removed by positive reinforcement
Nativism
Chomsky
Children have a LAD which allows language to be hard wired
- cannot always be corrected
- use rules to create own utterances
H/w didn’t focus on how Lang is actually developed
Interactionist
Bruner
Children learn through parentese from care givers. (Builds on nativism)
- rising intonation (looking for feedback)
- diminutive words ( doggie )
H/w children cannot aquire Lang beyond own rate
Cognitive
Piaget
Language is developed in sync with understanding
- cannot articulate concepts they don’t understand
- avoid language they don’t understand
H/w evidence of people with cognitive disabilities who aquire Lang beyond their understanding
Zone Proximal Development
Vygotsky
Language can be acquired with the help from a more ‘knowledgeable other’
- children correct utterances with adult guidance
- children repeat older siblings
Morphological overgeneralisation
Because one word adds a plural on the end then all do
Semantic overgeneralisation
Because one animal is a dog then all 4 legged animals are dogs
