What is it?
A
Presence of kidney damage, maifested by abnormal albumin excretion or decreased kidney function for over 3 months

What are the complications?
A
Anaemia of chronic disease Mineral and bone disease Hyperparathyroidism HTN CVD Malnutrition Fluid overload Metabolic acidosis

Why does anaemia develop?
A
Reduced erythropoietin production so reduced stimulation of RBC production by bone marrow

How is the anaemia managed?
A
Give EPO with iron

What is the management?
A
Treat underlying disease
Reduce CV risk - statins, BP, weight loss, smoking
Reduce proteinuria - ACEi/ARB
At late stages discus RRT

How is the hyperparathyroidism treated?
A
Active vit D
Low phosphate diet
Calcimimetics
Parathyroidectomy
