What is CIWS?
(Close In Weapon System) -Mt. 22
Provides final defense against ASMD. Can operate in a surface mode and engage small surface or slow air targets
What is the LCS and RCS? Where are they located?
LCS- Local Control Station; located in AFT CIWS
RCS- Remote Control Station; located in Combat between MSS and Air
Air Mode
Max effective range - 1nm
Rate of fire - 4500 RPM
Surface Mode
Max effective range - 2nm
Rate of fire - 3000 RPM
Surface mode of fire
Manually controlled from the RCS or LCS and uses infrared thermal imager
Air Auto mode of fire
System is continuously searching for targets and is capable of engaging a target automatically
Air Manual mode of fire
Same as Air Auto mode of fire, EXCEPT that gun is initiated by the operator
What is a Hot Gun?
300 rounds or more in 5 minutes or less
What HERO condition is set for uploads and downloads?
HERO-5
What is the flag for HERO (Hazard of Electro-magnetic Radiation Ordnance)?
LIMA
What is the flag for ordnance handling?
BRAVO
How many safeties does CIWS have?

What does each safety do?
Pre-Arm/Arm/Safe button - selects gun safe or armed status
Hold Fire button - when selected, interrupt gun firing circuit
Mount Safety connector - when disconnected inhibits mount motion and gun firing
STBY maintenance/operate - In OPERATE position, allows operator to engage from LCS. Must be in STBY maintenance for RCS control
FCI Key - in closed position, allows 300VDC to reach the gun and fire a chambered round
Mount Safety switch - in SAGE, gun firing and mount motion are inhibited
Clearing Sector Holdback Tool - prevents round from chambering
