Recruitment

A

Conditions of the army were very poor at home and even worse abroad.
Pay was less than that of a labourer and had to pay for a soldiers food and accomodation ( during peace time ) and equipment.
Between 1700 -1800 there were no barracks for soldiers to live in.As the size of the army increased towns and cities increasingly met problems, with large number of soldiers causing disturbance and disreupting trade.
1757 militia act was deeply resented and provoked riots.

Public attitudes of the war

A

Crimean War - public criticism of leadership led to government resigning
Boer War - concerns over quality of recruits due to the armies performance led to calls for change
The press inspired public to make a contribution by donating equipment.
Times fund for sick amd sounded soliders raised over £5000 a week ( 3 million nowadays )

The cost of the army rose from about £ 1 million in 1700 to about 8 million in the mid 18th centrury .The burden of extra cost was relatively small as the population grew and the standard of livong rose. In wartime, taxes rose considerably n the wars against France n 1793-1815 cost around 25 million a year
