Battle Of Balaclava , 1854 Flashcards
What did the Battle of Balaclava show about artillery
The battle was showing that artillery was having a greater impact in warfare, limiting the success of the cavalry charge
Lord Raglan had ordered Lord Lucan to recapture the cannon , but the orders were vague and porrly explained. In the confusion Lord Lucan thought he was being asked to attack the Russian cannon.
Lucan ordered Lord Cardigan’s Light Brigade to charge the Russian cannon.Out of 673 men in the Light Brigade 113 were killed and 134 were wounded
Why sid the British lose ( old methods )
Old methods like the cavalry charge, against a defensive line of infantry with the latest armed rifles led to a huge loss of life
Raglan’s actions at Balaclava showed the
Disadvantages of commission that were bought instead of earned.
Raglan made many mistakes including
He delayed the attack on Sebastopol , giving the enemy time to build their defences
He knew about the build up of Russian forces but didn’t reinforce defences
Due to the fact it was the first photographed war
He was heavily criticised in the British press
