30
Which slave states remained in the Union and were called border states?
Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware
31
Why did South Carolina believe it had the right to secede? Why did Lincoln believe it did not have the right to secede?
South Carolina’s argument for secession was that the states were sovereign and had voluntarily joined the Union, and that when the government failed to protect the rights of the states, they could withdraw from the Union. Lincoln’s argument against secession was that the Union was permanent, the Constitution had no provision for ending it, and theConstitution gave the national government sovereignty over the states.
32
What were the effects of the Emancipation Proclamation?
It transformed the war from a war to save the Union into a war of liberation Slaves began leaving their masters Britain would not recognize the South as a nation It paved the way for the eventual end of slavery Black regiments began to form in the North
33
What were the effects of the Civil War on the nation?
620,000 soldiers were killed Many soldiers were wounded or lost limbs Much personal property and industrial capacity was destroyed (especially in the South) Roads and farmlands were ruined Deep bitterness, distrust and hatred existed between the North and the South for many years.
