First battle on Union soil. There was not a clear victory. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Fredericksburg
Lee’s greatest victory. Outnumbered Burnside’s forces by dividing his army. Was a key transportation hub.
Battle of Bull Run
Realized the war would take longer than 90 days. Stonewall Jackson ordered his men to charge at Union line and scream.
Joseph Hooker
Replaced General Burnside after a devastating Union loss in the battle of Fredericksburg.
General Ambrose Burnside
Union General in the battle of Fredericksburg.
George G. Meade
Union General at the battle of Gettysburg.
Ulysses S. Grant
Lead Union forces through the battle of Vicksburg. For 6 weeks, Union gunboats shelled the city, while Grant’s army bombarded it from land. Grant waged total war.
Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson
Lead the confederate forces, and was Lee’s right hand man. Was shot by his own men during the battle of Chancellorsville. Loosing Jackson was Lee’s greatest loss.
Rose Greenhow
Confederate spy.
John Wilkes Booth
The man who murdered President Lincoln. His original plan was to kidnap Lincoln, but ended up murdering him in the end.
Jefferson Davis
President of the CSA.
Abraham Lincoln
President of the USA during the time of the civil war. His main priority was to get the CSA to join the Union again.
Gettysburg Address
A speech by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg in memory of the Union soldiers who had died trying to protect the ideals of freedom upon which the nation was founded.
George B. McClellan
Union General in the battle of Antietam. Ran against Lincoln in the election of 1864, but lost.
Election of 1864
Lincoln ran against McClellan for president. Lincoln won, and was re-elected.

William T. Sherman/Sherman’s march to the sea
Sherman was Grant’s “right hand man.” He marched troops to Atlanta, then to Savannah in order to split the South into 3 parts.
George Pickett
Confederate General who lead 15,000 soldiers in a charge across a low ground that separated the two forces. This famous battle is know as Pickett’s Charge.
Emancipation Proclamation
An order issued by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring slaves in the Confederate states to be free.
