Description of Merrimack vs Monitor

A

When Union withdraw from VA, they leave the Merrimack. CSA take it and add iron clads, rename the Virginia.
In response, the Union create the Monitor and add iron clads, add a flat deck, and 2 guns.
The Virginia attacked and sunk wooden boats
Battle ends in a draw. Iron clads were considered elite. South could never compete with the amount of iron clads the Union had. Union have more resources.

Vicksburg was hard to defend and easy to attack. Hard to attack because you need control of the Mississippi.
For six weeks, Grant attacked while being shelled from the River: He Trenched and Tunneled in the Ground.
Confederate soldiers ate horses and animals as they were starving, and they dug caves for protection.
Union win - Cut CSA in half
