What were the causes of the English Civil War?
- Charles married Catherine which caused conflict.
- Charles spent large amounts of money on himself and didn’t have any money for the army so he had to go to parliament for help.

Seven years of fighting between Charles’ supporters and Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarians claimed the lives of thousands, and ultimately, of the King himself. Charles was convicted of treason and executed on 30 January 1649 outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall.

1639 The Scots attack England because they do not like the religious changes. Charles has no army or money to fight.He has to ask Parliament for help.
1640 Parliament demands more power.
1640 Parliament execute the king’s advisor and put Laud in prison.
November 1641 Grand Remonstrance. A list of things the Parliament was upset with, this was presented to the King.
December 1641 Parliament takes control of the army. This has been under the King’s control.
January 1642 Charles tried to arrest five MPs in parliament.
June 1642 Parliament passed a new set of demands called the 19 proposals that called for the king’s power to be greatly reduced.
