Freed the slaves IN STATES THAT WERE REBELLING. Not certain states, cities, or counties controlled by Union.

Who won the election of 1864? How did this affect the war?
Lincoln won in a landslide. The only way the Union could have lost was if he lost the election, but he won.
What happened at Appomattox Courthouse?
Lee surrendered, basically the end of the Civil War (not quite but practically.) April 9, 1865.
When was Lincoln assassinated?
April 14, 1865. John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Southern sympathizer. Others hung.
How much of the total population died in the Civil War?
About 2-3%. Not just soldiers, but civilians, women+children.
When did Lincoln write the Emancipation Proclamation, and when did it go into effect? Why?
He wrote it before the battle of Antietam.
Issued it after the win at Antietam.
Effect on January 1, 1863.
He needed a victory to issue the proclamation, and still gave time to get states to come back and keep slaves.
