Q

Seeing the big picture: When have you been alert to emerging issues that affect your team/ own work?

A

Disability service- keep up to date with what DDSA are funding, but also Sheffield uni and to a degree what other universities were funding so as not to give incorrect information and have people disappointed e.g. scribes for lectures sheffield funds but DDSA doesn’t so they would need ot check if other unis do.

Internship- Emerging issue that the impacts were not engineering, and that next year the evluation of the policy in scotland woud come out, and would we be better holding off for this.

Q

Seeing the big picture: Seeking to understand how the services, activities and strategies in the area work together to create value for the customer/ diverse stakeholders?

A

Internship-
See the wide range of stakeholders- so public (twitter facebook), media (news), patients, surgeons (easier cheaper? Conferences), hospitals- no cell expansion, government MUP, public- different socioeconommic groups impact differently?

to fully understand my role and the importance, looked to understand how my output would be used, so could understand how to write objectively but with the wider aims in mind.

Q

Changing and Improving: Work with others to identify areas for improvement and simplify processes to use fewer resources.

A

Anatomy soc- feedback e.g. not biomed based- I read over and transitioned into using past biomed students/ maters. Also big initial task e.g. kahoot but once it was made follow the same fomatso reduce resources

Second case study for the internship learnt a lot from the first case-study and asked for feedback on my work so that I could improve for the next time= broad into narrow, how to take notes for others to follow, how to use all of the sites efficiently (time) and use technology to advantage- Altmetrics etc.

Q

Clearly explain the reasons for change to colleagues and how to implement them, supporting individuals with different needs to adapt to change.

A

Disability serivce- supported individuals through the transition into university- from open days, until here- biomed mentor for one girl.
This inspired inclusivity of different learning methods at our revision sessions and explained this to others in the committee as inclusions officeer/secretary.

Q

Changing and Improving: Encourage an environment where colleagues know that they can challenge decisions and issues safely.

A

For fellow committee members every week I put out the post for agenda points so that everybody has the opportunity to raise anything they wanted to speak about. Also feedback from events gave anonymous feedback which we could use to improve our sessions.

A

Kahoot Quiz- Looked at past feedback of our revision sessions saw people lked interactive sessions, spoke to other disability ambassors, and peers to guage their opionions. Finally posted a poll on faebook with the option of a traditional revision session, kahoot, etc.
Got really positive feedback and this has been repeated for the medics too.

Q

Making effective decisions: Understand own level of responsibility and empower others to make decisions where appropriate.

A

Internship- not engineering and present that the data from scotland was to be released at the end of this year- which would add huge value to the case study but not be ready for this REF year. Academic and REF line manager held a meeting and postponed the case study a year- so not submitted and not able to for another 5 years.

Q

Leadership:

Ensure colleagues and stakeholders have a clear understanding of objectives, activities and time-frames

A

Anatomy society conference- We discussed in a meeting all of the tasks to be done, and when their deadline was. As secretary I included this in my minutes and made a gantt chart for all of the tasks to be done and for people to highlight the task when each had been done on our google-drive. This chart included when to email all of the speakers and arrange the workshops, arrange their travel etc months in advance- save money but also organise the timings for the day know everyone is in the city etc.

Q

Leadership: Take into account different individual needs, views, and ideas, championing inclusion and equality of opportunity for all. Role-model commitment and satisfaction with role.

A

Disability service- Tour guide, tailored the talks to their individual needs, and what information would be most useful for them, whilst representing the university. That knowledge filtered into when i was working with the anatomy society too- so arranging lots of different revision techniques, so the anatomy illustration classes, demonstrating with wet specimens, and kohoot interactive quiz.

Q

Communicating and influencing: Communicate in a straightforward, honest and engaging manner, choosing appropriate styles to maximise understanding and impact.

A

I have had a range of different communication experiences, from demonstrating at a revision session with the anatomy society, working as a waitress to as a tour guide and disability ambasador. range of ages, with people who have a range of different disabilities so change tone accordingly.
Also the internship was in a more formal, persuasive yet objective tone.

17
Q

Encourage the use of different communication methods, including digital resources and highlight the benefits, including ensuring cost effectiveness.

A

Anatomy society- skype for illistration sessions. Could rent equipment from the university and she had a camera- save on train faires.

18
Q

Establish professional relationships with a range of stakeholders. Collaborate with these to share information, resources and support.

A

East asian department at university- worked on a week of events- handing out feedback forms, managing social media promotion etc. Offered to help them with the feedback form analysis. Also the case study authors held meeting with to get information from- already researched so has well informed useful questions. As well as feeding back every fortinight to the head of REF in the engineering department with a mini presentation with what we have found and what avenues we are going to explore next.

19
Q

Delivering at pace
Show a positive approach to keeping the whole team’s efforts focused on the top priorities. Promote a culture of following the appropriate procedures to ensure results are achieved on time whilst still enabling innovation.

A

The Anatomy society gantt chart. Set time goal and another sheet further down had details/ ideas anybody could add under each task to guide the person but also show there are alternative methods- For example a task I had was to order our hoodies with the sponsors on and our society name so we were recognisable on the day- and I explored different sites comparing price and reading reviews, brought the mock up design to the meetings so we could vote on colour etc, but enquired the time each company would take to make up the order and then added another month on, so that we would definitely have the hoodies in time.

20
Q

3 reasons want to do the scheme?

A
  1. To be able to transition cutting edge research into practice, and working for the government- patriotic. Internship, lab placement.I am so enthusiastic about topics like health and climate change and would be really rewarding to use all of the skills I have sought to develop to actually bring about change and help people and the planet. Seeing impact from anatomy soc
  2. To be able to keep growing my skills with the constant feedback and development.
  3. To be supported into the transition of work, as I have a lot of interests I think it will be really beneficial to be able to be put in different departments to see what I enjoy and what I am best at.
21
Q

General: Seeing the bigger picture.

A

University ambassador and intern- objective but positive about the university, tailoring the tone and points said to the person’s needs.

22
Q

Why leeds?

A

When I visted leeds I thought it felt like a london away from london with the historic industrial buildings blending seemlessly with the modern. And I do love london but having gone to university in Sheffield I feel like up there is more ‘my city’ as opposed to where I grew up, as it is where I first had my indepdence. Also the northern cities are so vibrant with lots of culture, and I have travelled to leeds a couple of times for art exhibitions. Or near to the Yorkshire dales- as I enjoy walking.

23
Q

What do you think the challenges will be with the scheme?

A

Being flexible and being able to change from one placement to the next, adapting to the new working styles and environment. I got some experience of this with the internship as this was very varied, but also I found moving from biomedical science into Public Health very interesting as I had to completely shift my mindset and values from purely focused on the disease agent to wider social determinants of health and the geographic epidemiology of that disease.

24
Q

ability to communicate impartial technical advice clearly and concisely?

A

Internship- engineering department- not necessarily advice but it was an objective yet persuasive piece where technical information had to be communicated in lay terms.

25
Q

ability to recognise and communicate risks, uncertainities, gaps, limitations and misintrepreations associated with an evidence base.

A

Internship- lack of engineering impact and also that the evaluation was to be released next year- so probably better waiting instead of scoring poorly. Conveyed my concern with my line manager and he organised a meeting with the academic to go through my research and came to the same conclusion.

26
Q

Apply your scientific skills to provide innovative solutions to problems?

A

3rd year lab placement- having worked in my lab placement in coloured fluorescent dyes- suggested using this as opposed to the black dye for visualising the cells we were struggling to see. Due to time the academic tsaid this was not possible, so I suggested using a red dye as opposed to black which was the first thing we tried in our team that the academic hadnt suggested

27
Q

Ability to take into account different stakeholders views?

A

Internship:
- Goverment/ policymakers- policy documents
- News outlets
- Public: Twitter, facebook, youtube
-Surgeons- Youtube, conferences.
Patients- patient accounts spoken about in videos/news/twitter
