Civil Rights Tactics Flashcards
Occupation
People take over a location by force, sometimes taking hostages, and make demands. This puts pressure on the government or some other body to meet their demands to peacefully resolve the show-down.
Boycott
People are refusing to buy or participate in something, which puts pressure on whoever the subject of the action is to change, usually because they are losing money.
Speeches
Someone talks to a large group of people and tries to convince them of something. If they can convince enough people this may help achieve their goal.
Sit ins
People go to a location and refuse to leave until a demand is met. This puts pressure on whoever runs the place they are in to meet the demand so they can get the people to leave and avoid bad publicity.
Marches
People walk from one place to another, often carrying signs and/or chanting slogans. This can help them achieve their goal by getting publicity and raising awareness.
Civil disobedience
People are intentionally breaking a rule or law they think is unfair with the intention of being punished to raise awareness of the unfairness of the rule or law, and possibly to set up a court case to challenge it.
Laws and judicial rulings
People try to change things through the government by getting rules either made or overturned. This can help achieve their goal because if they are successful, everyone will need to follow what the government says.
