Nativist
a person who urges the promotion of the interests of inhabitants born in a country over those of immigrants

Battle of Fort Sumter
First fired shots of the Civil War. (Confederate Victory, fought in South Carolina)
Suffrage
the right to vote, especially in a political election.
Battle of Bull Run
1861- 1st MAJOR battle of Civil War; proved war was going to be long and costly
Co-Education
the education of students of both sexes together.
Abolitionist
a person who favors the abolition of a practice or institution, especially capital punishment or slavery.
Battle of Shiloh
Confederate forces surprised Union troops & drove them across Tennessee; Union carried on and won the battle, but it was one of the most bloody battles in the Civil War
Casualty
a person killed or injured in a war or accident.

Prohibition
the action of forbidding something, especially by law.
Three-Fifths Compromise
Three of every five slaves were counted when determining a state’s total population for legislative representation and taxation.
Popular Sovereignty
Popular sovereignty is a government based on the consent of the people.
Battle of Antietam
Civil War battle in which the North succeeded in stopping Lee’s Confederate forces in Maryland. Was THE bloodiest battle of the war, resulting in 25,000 casualties.
Battle of Gettysburg
The turning point of the Civil War that had made it clear the North would win. (50,000 people died, and the South lost its chance to invade in the North.)
Underground Railroad
A network of people offering shelter and aid to escaped enslaved people from the South.
Dred Scott Decision
Supreme Court stated that enslaved people were not citizens of the United States and, therefore, could not expect any protection from the federal government or the courts.
