A

Emmit has a stutter and whistles to get it under control. He ends up whistling at a lady, who happens to be married to a cop. Emmit gets taken in and gets brutally beat up to and dies. Mom has enough will not let this death go unnoticed and does a open casket.

Ross Parks

A

Rosa Parks doesn’t give up her seat which ends up getting sparking another push towards Civil Rights. With a number of people and determination people sought to desegregate the buses. This idea of “I’m done” people began standing up for their rights.

Montgomery bus boycott

A

This was a boycott that resulted in the integration of Montgomery, Alabama’s bus system. This boycott got the media involvement, which lead to publicity. The boycott stopped when the Supreme Court said that bus segregation was unconstitutional, this lead to more Civil Rights groups. Ex: SCLC

SCLC is formed

A

SCLC starts a nonviolent resistance, this becomes a popular method for CRs group. When the SCLC started to gain success it lead to inspiration and more determination. However inspiration lead to WCC which tried to prevent CRs group from gaining more success.

A

Little Rock Nine was the integration of a school. With the high resistance in the Southern states this lead to the LRN group getting the national guard to protect them.

Emergence of the Nation of Islam

A

This was the rise in black nationalism, Malcom X. This a was doctrine that called for complete separation from the white society. Malcom X rejected the idea of nonviolence. “The White man is the devil.”

Sit down strike

A

4 AA students from NC sat down at a lunch counter in the Woolworth’s drugstore in Greensboro. The students were not served and they continued to go gaining more support as they came. This began more sit-ins across the South. However, with the owners not serving them it began hitting them economically, which lead to business leaders giving in. Another group was formed because of this called the SNCC.

Freedom Rides

A

This was the testing to see if the Southern states were complying to the Supreme Court ruling that segregation in interstate travel is illegal. A group was formed by CORE to ride through the South and to challenge it. On the road they were subjected to violence and after a fire bomb went off CORE withdrew, only to have the SNCC take over.

A

JJames and rolls into Meredith, a all-white school. First integrate “The price of progress is high, but the price of holding back is much higher.” When James gets rejected JFK gets him into class but with a body guard.

Protests in Birmingham

A

30 protestors were arrested for marching at Birmingham without a permit. As the leader of Birmingham campaign MLK marched with them and got arrested. In jail MLK responds to a ad in the newspaper saying that Black people have been hearing the words wait it’s the right time, this wait = never. Says we cannot wait no longer “justice too long delayed is justice denied.”

A

A protest in which more than 250,000 demonstrated in the nations capital for “jobs and freedom.” This is where MLK of his dream for a better America.

A

CRA: A landmark act that banned discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, or national origin; the most important civil rights law since Reconstruction. Freedom Summer: a campaign to register black voters.

Malcolm X murdered; Selma to Montgomery March; Voting rights act; president speech

A

Malcolm X is shot by 3 Nation of Islam members. Selma was a March from Selma to the state capital to present to the governor a list of grievances. When they got to the bridge troops advanced on them and attacked. The Voting Rights Act was passed which outlawed literacy tests to prevent AA from voting. Affirmative action: this policy called for employers to actively seek to increase the number of minorities in the workforce.

A

MLK was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee where he had gone to support sanitation workers’ strike. Kerner: the Nation Advisory Commission on Civil Disorder that concluded that white racism was the fundamental cause for the Watts riot.
