Plessy v. Ferguson

A

Seperate but equal

Plessy challenged the legality of the Jim Crow laws on trains but was found guilty

The segregation laws became stronger as the Supreme Court ruled that segregation was legal as the facilities were equal

White female nurses weren’t to work in rooms with black men - Alabama
Coloured barbers couldn’t cut hair of white girls or women - Georgia
Second hand textbooks can’t be exchanged between races - North Carolina

The KKK

A

White supremacy, formed after the civil war in 1865 but was reborn in 1915 during ww1 and grew more powerful after ww2

Involved violent opposition eg lynching, beatings and burning houses

A

National association for the advancement of coloured people - activist group who fought for African rights

Bus boycotts

A

Beginning with rosa parks refusal to move for a white passenger on a train, there was a 13 month African American boycott of the buses where they refused to take public transport and as a result the bus company nearly went broke

Desegregation of public transport then occurred in 1956

Brown v. The board of education

A

Thurgood Marshall a high profile African lawyer who worked with the NAACP went to court in 1951 to protest for desegregated education
