Origins of apartheid
White settlers from holland came in 1652
British came in 1860s and took control by force by 1900.
The government was banded to the British in 1910 and the bedrock legislation was passed in 1911-1936 which formed the groundwork for apartheid
Examples of bedrock legislation
Defiance act 1911, white citizen force
Native representation removed cape province indigenous people from electoral rolls
Outline the African national congress
Formed in 1912, individuals from church organisations, cheifs, and representatives of peoples met to form anc.
Aim was to bring all Africans together and defend their rights and freedoms.
Examples of apartheid
Prohition of mixed marriages 1949
Morality act 1950 , sexual relations between race
Population registration act 1950, divided land into Asians whites blacks and coloured
Defiance campaign
1952, non violent protest to challenge the government for African rights
Nelson Mandela
Member of the ANC, president of South Africa 1995, the face of anti apartheid
Steven Biko
Activist and founder of the Black consciousness Movement, co founder of SASO in 69’ - provided legal aid, medical assistance ect to indigenous communities
Served by a banning order restricting him greatly and dieting in prison as a result of police brutality
F.w De Klerk
South African president who released Nelson from prison and ended apartheid in 1994
Soweto
Students peacefully protested sang but were shot down by police in which well over 200 children and young adults were killed. Which lead to chaos, buildings were torched and people rebelled
End of apartheid
De Klerk announced the end stating its failure and bedrock legislation was removed
The ban on the ANC was lifted
Mandela became very famous and wanted to reconcile and forgive
Mandela also become the first African president
