>Linda Brown refused into all-white school
>NAACP took to the Supreme Court and won
>Chief Justice Earl Warren set no deadline, so didn’t happen for a long time

Emmitt Till murdered:
>His Mother had an open casket to get media attention on the discriminatory and racism shown
1956
Montgomery Bus Boycott:
>Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man
>WPC set up fliers to go around, MLK organized protest
>lasted 381 days
>Bus profits fell by 60%
1957
Little Rock 9:
>9 black students were sent to an originally all-white school
>Orval Faubus had them blocked
>Faubus closed the school
>Eisenhower spoke to Faubus
>Had the 9 students sent in with the 101st Airborne for protection
1960
Sit-ins:
>SNCC
>400 integrated students sat at all-white lunch counters
>faced violence from non-supporters
>was a non-violent protest
>Mayor Ben West saw their actions& by May 1960 lunch counters were desegregated

Freedom Riders:
>CORE activists
>many states didn’t obey laws after MBB and so deliberately rode on buses
>faced worst violence of the civil rights campaign
>200 riders were jailed for 40days
>Governor of Alabama John Patterson did little help for their protection
>until he was put under pressure by JFK
>Robert Kennedy organized the desegregation of all interstate travel
