What happened during the Montgomery Bus Boycott?

A

Cause: Rosa Parks refused to move for a white man on a bus.

Event: African Americans went on a boycott of the buses. This went on for 381 days. The bus company lost a lot of money.

Consequence: Alabama declared segregation laws on buses unconstitutional (against the founding laws of the US)

What happened during the Little Rock High School event?

A

Cause: Brown vs Board of Education (1954) stated that segregation in schools was unconstitutional

Event: Nine African American students were stopped by the National Guard from entering the school. President Eisenhower sent in troops from the national army to help these students get into school.

Consequence: The school closed for a year after and eventually re-opened. Desegregated.

A

Cause: Four African American men were refused service at a whites only lunch counter

Event: They decided to perform a non violent sit in. 300 students joined within 5 days and it later spread to 13 states and 55 cities.

Consequence: Dining facilities were integrated by the summer of 1960

A

Cause: Birmingham, Alabama was considered one of the most racist and segregated cities in America

Event: Months of marches and peaceful demonstrations occurred. They were met with police dogs, water canons and brutality. It was shown nationally and sparked outrage across the US.

Consequence: Many businesses in the city agreed to desegregate
