A test administrated as a precondition fro voting, often used to prevent African Americans from exercising their right to vote
Literacy Test
A special tax that had to be paid as a qualification for voting
Poll tax
A device used by southern states to disenfranchise. It restricted voting to those who grandfather had voted before 1867
Grandfather Clause
A state primary election that restricted voting to whites only. Outlawed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1944
White Primary
The doctrine holding that separate-but-equal facilities do not violate the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. constitution.
Separate but equal
The movement that supports political, economic, and social equality for WOMEN
Feminism

Suffrage
Any practice, policy, or procedure that denies equality of treatment to an individual or to a group because of gender.
Gender discrimination
Unwanted physical or verbal contact or abuse of a sexual nature that interferers with a recipient’s job performance and creates a hostile work environment
Sexual Harassment
A policy in educational admissions or job hiring that gives special attention or compensatory treatment to traditionally disadvantage groups, in an effort to overcome present effects of past discrimination
Affirmative action
Discrimination against individuals whoa re not members of a minority group
Reverse discrimination
Racial segregation that occurs because of pattern of racial residence and similar social condition.
De Facto Segregation
A nonviolent, public refusal to obey allegedly unjust laws.
Civil disobedience
Racial segregation that occurs because of laws or administrative decisions by public agencies.
