Montgomery Bus Boycott
1955- Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to white man, and got arrested.
Then in 1956 the Supreme Court voted that bus segregation was unconstitutional
Brown vs. Board of Education of 1954
Said segregation was illegal in public schools.
Overturned court case Plessy vs. Ferguson which said that “separate but equal facilities were legal”
Little Rock nine
1957- Nine black students were admitted to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Orval Faubus called national guard to prevent them from going in school.
President Eisenhower got federal troops to escort them in.
Freedom Rider of 1960
Group of bus riders went on bus trip through south to show the cities who were breaking the law and had bus segregation.
What happened when the buses crossed the Alabama state line?
One of the two buses was firebombed. The riders were beaten while trying to escape to get to hospital.
What happened to the second freedom rider bus?
It was attacked in Birmingham, Alabama. Robert Kennedy had to escort the riders out of Alabama.
By 1963, desegregation was near complete.
1963 March on Washington
200000 people gathered at Lincoln memorial on August 28, 1963.
Wanted to advance Civil Rights Movement by fighting for equal economic opportunities for blacks.
Who organized the March on Washington?

Civil Rights Act
1964- banned racial discrimination in public facilities and employment.
Passed under Lyndon B. Johnson
Voting Rights March
1965- Civil Rights leaders launched a voting registration drive in Selma, Alabama.
What happened when blacks tried to vote at voting registration?
The blacks were beaten
The Civil Rights leaders responded with protest march from Selma to Montgomery.
Governor George Wallace banned the protest march.
What happened when The governor said no?
The people began the 50 mile walk on March 7, 1965.
Outside of Selma, the people in the walk were beaten by the police.
Gained more support from people.
Voting Rights Act
1965- put the voting registration process under federal control.
Federal examiners watched to make sure there was no discrimination.
Kerner Commission
1965- a riot in Watts lasted 6 days in response to a routine police arresting.
34 people were killed and 4,000 were arrested.
Warned that the nation was moving toward 2 separate societies.

April 4, 1968. Was shot by sniper in Tennessee.
