1) Many southerners regarded them as inferior

1) It was decided in court that the ‘seperate but equal’ laws where no longer valid
2) By 1955 the supreme court called for desegregation

1) 25 black students were accepted into the school
2) There were state troops sent in to stop them entering
3) There was pictures taken of racist abuse shared around the world
What was the outcome of Little Rock
1) Bad publicity for US
2) Eisenhower called off the state troops
3) Eisenhower sent in 1,000 federal troops
What was the montgomery bus boycott
1) Rosa Parks stand up to segregation bus law
2) WPC use this as an opportuinity to start the bus boycott
What happened at Greensboro (1960)
1) 4 kids sat and stayed at an all white canteen
2) The sit ins spread across all of Greensboro
3) The sit ins reached the news and soon both black and white people were taking part
4) SNCC was set up and trained students in non-violent protest
What was agreed in the civil rights act (1964)
Prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, colour, religion or sex
What was agreed in the voting rights act of 1965
Banned literacy tests or any other form of stopping African Amerians from voting
What were the freedom rides (1961)
The freedom rides were when a group of protesters rode on buses down to the south in support of the civil rights movement
What happened to the freedom riders
They were abused, bombed and beaten up at every stop by white people
What happened in Birmingham, Alabama (1963)
1) Hundreds took part in sit-ins, boycotts and marches
2) The jails became full so they used police dogs and hoses on them-propoganda win
What were the key events of the march on Washington (1963)
1) After Birmingham civil rights leaders decided to protest all over the USA
2) They decided to have a march on washington as the white house is there
3) On 28th of August 250,000 people took part-40,000 white
4) MLK made his ‘I have a dream speech’ and it was a success
What was the freedom summer of 1964
It was a period of time when the SNCC and CORE tried to get as many black people to vote as they could
What were the consequences of the freedom summer
1,600 more black americans voted
Brought more awareness
KKK movements increased-37 churches burned and 30 black homes
Many people were beaten up and 11 people were killed
17,000 people tried to vote and only 1600 got through
What happened to Emmet Till (1955)
He was accused of making sexual suggestion to a shopowner’s wife and as a result was brutally murdered
