civil disobediance Flashcards
doubtful of reform in the government
he says that its nearly impossible to reform the government, but if you were to do so, do it peacefully. dont participate in actions that you dont like or in the government.
unjust government
the government is unjust, and this is seen in the mexican war and in slavery. the govt goes by majority rule, not by what is actually best for the country. it may be popular but it isnt necessarily right.
civil disobediance in democracy
he says its not exactly easy to do this because he believes that people shouldnt compromise or tolerate a polocy that he or she dont want and democracy is all about compromise.
wealth and consumption
Thoreau is highly critical of wealth and consumption, he argues when ppl have wealth, they get distracted on what to spend it on rather than living their lives. it is hard to go against institutions and make money.
injustice
if you are not arguing against injustice, you are just as bad as those who promote it. itd be better to go to jail and do what is right and protest than to go along with injustice.
