What type of cases does the county court deal with?
The county court deals with civil (non criminal) cases.
Mostly, businesses trying to recover money they are owed.
Individuals seeking compensation for injuries
Landowners seeking orders for Tresspass
How many divisions in the high court and what are they?
- Chancery, queens bench, family
What do each of the divisions of the high court do? (Chancery, queens bench, family)
Queens bench- majority of work, tort contract.
Chancery- tax, property, bankruptcy
Family- adoption, divorce, wills, child custody
What is standard pre trial procedure?
1) Claimant sends a letter to defendant saying why they’re at fault,details of injury etc.
2) defendant has 3 months to investigate and explain if he accepts or denys liability.
3) party’s agree on an expert witness
4) failure to comply may result in liability for certain costs
