Beliefs about what is fair and what is right or wrong
Morals
Rules, enforced by government.
Laws
Breaking the law in the nonviolent way because it goes against a person’s morals
Civil disobedience
Written laws made by legislatures
Statutes
A body of law based on a judges decision
Common law
A written collection of laws, often organized by subject.
Legal code
Any behavior that is illegal because the government considers it to be harmful to society
Crime
The group of laws that tell which acts are crimes, how accused persons should be tried in court, and how crimes should be punished
Criminal law
A serious crime in which the penalty can be imprisonment for more than one year
Felony
A less serious crime for which the penalties often is a fine
Misdemeanor
The group of laws that help settle disagreements between people
Civil law
